Chapter 14: Home
The whole way home, Josh and Brian had been joking with each other about this “big surprise” they had waiting for me at home. But every time I begged to know what it was, or even for a clue, they were tight lipped. They’d just smirk at each other. The only thing I got out of them — repeatedly — was, “you’re going to love it”.
I drove, while Josh and Brian sat together in the back. Some of the time we all talked like friends, while some of the time the two of them would talk to each other in hushed, affectionate tones. Occasionally they made out for a little bit, but didn’t go any further than that. I guess they were probably exhausted from all the sex they’d had on our honeymoon. It was beautiful to see the two lovers like this. It made me feel a little wistful that this was the end of it.
When we pulled up to the house, the two of them got out. “Bring in our bags,” Brian ordered. “We’ll be checking that your surprise is ready.”
The two of them walked up to the house as I struggled with the bags. I set the first lot down on the front doorstep, and went back for the second lot. After locking up the car I brought all the bags inside. I took ours into the bedroom, and left Brian’s in the living room by the door. The two of them were nowhere in sight, so I sat down on the sofa and waited.
A minute or so later the two of them came in from the back yard, both looking pleased. Brian looked at me, looked at his bags on the floor, and smirked that arrogant alpha smirk he always does. Like he knew something I didn’t. “Wedding present’s all ready for you,” he said. “Come on.”
I studied both their faces, but other than that arrogant smirk on Brian’s face there was nothing to give any indication of what was about to happen. If anything, Josh looked a little nervous.
I followed them through the kitchen and out into the yard. The garden looked the same, and it took me a second to realise what the surprise was. But then I saw that the shed was newly painted, with a new door.
“You got the shed renovated?”
Josh said nothing. “Look inside,” Brian said, gesturing.
I opened up the door and looked in. It had been completely remodelled. The walls painted a neutral tone, a new single bed, bedside table and writing desk. There were lights, carpet and curtains. It wasn’t exactly how I would have chosen to decorate — the choice of a single bed in a home office seemed especially odd — but it looked clean and inviting. I could see that the tiny bathroom had been remodelled too.
“This is great, you guys! I can’t believe you did this! How did you even afford it?”
“I used the money we’ve been saving for it,” Josh piped up.
Brian just smirked that smirk of his.
Then it hit me. The single bed. The fact that they used my money to do it. The way they kept on talking about it being a surprise especially for me. “Hang on. This is—”
Brian stopped me. “You’re gonna love it out here.”
My stomach dropped. I was stunned silent for a second. I looked at Josh; he looked so pleased with himself, like he honestly believed I was going to be happy about this surprise he’d just hit me with. For a few seconds I didn’t know what to say. Then finally I asked the obvious question. “How often?”
